I’ve been riding the Exar DB508 Ultra for over a year now, specifically the 2023 model. When it was launched in the Philippines during the Philippine Bike Demo Day 2023, I was given the display unit to test and review (check out my vlog and review here).
After a year of riding, I still love these wheels—they’ve been completely reliable with no issues. Now, with the chance to upgrade to a new set of full carbon wheels, I still prefer Magene’s EXAR DB508 Ultra. This latest version has been updated with carbon spokes and internal spoke nipples, taking the wheels to the next level!

The new model now features Vonoa spokes with internal nipples. Hiding the nipples improves aerodynamics and strengthens the rim, as the smaller holes required for internal nipples enhance structural integrity. This design also reduces stress on the spokes, which can lower the chances of fatigue-related breaks over time.
Another upgrade is in the freehub body. It still uses the flat ratchet system, compatible with the DT Swiss system, and maintains the 36-tooth ratchet from the 2023 version. What’s new for the 2025 model is the addition of a flat wire spring, enhancing durability and performance.
Almost everything else remains the same, with the design still combining a lower-profile front wheel and a higher-profile rear wheel. This setup provides high inertia in the rear wheel while maintaining excellent controllability in the front, allowing for efficient and stable riding. The newer version, however, features wider spokes, which improve aerodynamics even further.
